5 stars = Must visit!
4 stars = Really good. I take my friends here.
3 stars = Somewhat worth it... if you have nowhere better to go.
2 stars = Below average. Attend only when necessary.
1 star = Do not visit!
The Wheat Sheaf is a Toronto staple, so I can't really write anything new about it. They serve beer and they show the Toronto Maple Leafs on their televisions. If you are looking for more, go somewhere else. The food is average, but mainly below. They serve bar food, like wings and burgers, without much spirit or creativity. Expect grease and ketchup for $8-$14.
There's a dank dive bar quality to the place, but it keeps things authentic as the area gets fancier and more gentrified. The patio is small, and overlooks a very boring view of Bathurst Street. There's very little life at this intersection, other than taxis dropping off more affluent club goers headed east on King. If you're a tourist, head a bit north to Queen street and you'll get a better vibe.
One of the annoying things about the Wheat Sheaf, depending on who you are, is that this place explodes with sudden Leaf fan front-runners when the team is in the playoffs. People who couldn't care less when the team was 1.5 games out of 8th in the conference suddenly think we have "the best goalie" or whatever other cheer they think is appropriate. I've seen this year after year, and, with my apologies to bar owners across the city, it's kind of a relief that the Leafs haven't made the playoffs in so long.
