  • Anyone who knows me knows that I am constantly bordering on being given the title 'crazy cat lady.' Some say three cats gives you this distinction, others five, I have two. Either way, every year my title is confirmed when eight out of the ten Christmas cards I receive have cats on them (and 100% of the cards I send out also have cats on them).Unfortunately, over the past few weeks 'little cat' started exhibiting signs of having what I feared were urinary crystals (common, I hear, with male cats). Dundas West Animal Hospital is conveniently located five minutes from my place, so given my distress I thought I'd give it a chance. When I dropped in the desk manager was very patient and alleviated all my immediate concerns and reassured me that my cat's health had not reached 'crisis status' (i.e. the state of distress I was currently exhibiting). When I went in for my apt. two days later (closed, unfortunately, every other Sunday) the service was very prompt, and the vet's assistant was courteous and professional (my perception of him, however, may have been influenced by his uncanny resemblance to Dr. Jack Shepard from Lost, whom I've been told "can solve anything"). The veterinarian was equally helpful and answered all my questions, and unlike many doctors, did not seem like he wanted to rush me out of the door as soon as possible. He told me that they wanted to keep my cat over night for tests, to which I replied "how much is this going to cost, I'm a poor student." As much as I love my cats, I did not want to be (unknowingly) taken advantage of. He reassured me that this is common concern and the extra fee was (an extremely reasonable) 15$. All in all, 'little cat' is on the road to recovery (knock on wood) and the whole service cost me (including pills, check-up, analysis, boarding, and a months diet) under 200$. All the staff I dealt with, I must add, could not have been more lovely and empathetic. A key concern, I believe, for all animal lovers.
