  • Playing golf in early to mid September in Las Vegas is never easy. This is because of the maintenance schedules for most golf properties, who choose to overseed around this time annually. Aliante was open on this particular day that I wanted to play and thankfully had more than enough grass on the fairways on tee boxes. That alone is a plus this time of year when compared to many other similarly priced options. Unfortunately, the greens were another story. At least six of the greens were in bad condition and a number of others would not be anything a superintendent would want on his resume. The layout is similar to other recently built area courses, yet I didn't come away after my round thinking that any particular hole was unique or memorable. That said, I think all the Par 3's and Par 5's are legit in terms of fairness and length. The Par 4's don't run very long which brings down the total yardage on the scorecard. While the superintendent clearly has work to do on the greens, I was impressed with the rest of the people working here. GM Tim Yavello certainly cares about his golf staff. Pro shop employees, starter, cart guys, beverage cart girl were all quality people. Mr. Yavello literally jumped out of his office and drove out on the course when I informed him at the turn of some stupid behavior exhibited by the group in front of us. He took interest and action immediately after some drunk couple tipped a cart over into a greenside bunker on the eighth hole. These people were ok, but clearly damaged the golf cart and were driving that cart in a restricted area. So in a way, it serves them right. They should have quit after nine holes after doing something like that or at least gone in the pro shop and reported the damage themselves. Oh, this guy was wearing a Buffalo Bills hat and was less accurate with his tee shots than Scott Norwood at the end of Super Bowl XXV. As long as I'm not playing behind that guy again, I will be happy to return to Aliante once they solve the issues on the putting surfaces.
