El Torito is to mexican food what Roka Okur is to japanese food. If you are AT ALL familiar with authentic japanese food (and service) - this is not a good place for you. On the other hand - if you are not japanese and are aged 50+ and have never previously been in an authentic japanese restaurant - this might be a place is for you! This is americanized japanese food for folks who are unfamiliar with or uninterested in the real thing.
Note the happy hour has dramatically changed from what is posted on their corporate website. Bait-and- switch! (Seafood pun). Gone are the HH items which most-intruiged us and prompted our trial visit in the first place... Note HH is in the bar-only.
$3 bottles of Kirin and $5 (Masi) house wines. The yakitori (chicken chunks slathered in teriyaki sauce with tiny bits scallion in between) was a gross americanized abomination. The black cod skewers were not much better.
$1 oysters are available on Thursdays (though we did not see any posting or mention of this 'special' in the restaurant - we asked about it because I saw it on their website) were passable given the cheap price.
The soft shell crab 'sandwich' ($6 at HH) is really just a mini-slider. The best item we ordered was the butterfish tataki - but our order was comprised of only four thin bite-sized slices for $6 during HH. Not really much of a value.
Will not return.
