| - tl;dr: GET THE ASIAN GLAZED PORK BELLY TACOS WITH WATERMELON SALSA!!!!!
More notes: Only reason I took off a star is because they don't take reservations and seating is limited. Show up when they open (5pm) or be prepared for a long wait. We've waited 30 minutes on a Friday night before.
Made the mistake of going on a Saturday night around 7pm and they told us the wait was going to be 2-2.5 hours. That's insane. We tried to wait for a seat at the bar, but it was too packed and you'd practically have to get in a fist fight with other couples waiting for the same thing. We ended up placing our order to go- the bartender was super nice about this, gave us water with cucumber slices while we waited, and was very friendly. The menu is small plates, and I have always been with my husband and we order anywhere from 3-5 to share.
Since this review is skewing negative, let me get to the positive. ASIAN GLAZED PORK BELLY TACOS WITH WATERMELON SALSA!!!!! This is all you need to order. In fact, this may be all you need to eat again for the rest of your life. This menu item should be trademarked. As we were eating them, eyes closed in ecstasy, I wondered who the chef was behind these tacos. They cannot possibly be paying him or her enough. These tacos are seemingly simple. They are small flour tortillas topped with exactly 3 cubes of the Asian glazed pork belly and 3 cubes of watermelon "salsa", which is really just watermelon in some sort of vinegary marinade. I am seriously not doing these justice right now. I don't even love pork all that much, but I will always order these- they are life-changing. For frame of reference, That time we got the to-go order we ordered 4 orders of the pork belly tacos, 2 for each of us. Didn't give the rest of the menu a second glance.
We have eaten at Soul a handful of times now, tried various other things on the menu. We tried the sushi, it's fine. We tried the bone marrow, for fun, and that was cool and tasty. But we always come back to those tacos. They might be my death-row last meal sort of choice. The combination of sweet, salty, sour, crunchy....I am drooling just thinking about these, days later.
Oh, the cocktails are also good. :)
