| - Hello Medical Directors and Staff,
I am writing this review about my visit at Saint Rose Hospital on August 10, 2016. I was a patient at the NorthEast Veterans Hospital but I was transferred to Saint Rose Hospital on Lake Mead Parkway. As a new resident here in the State of Nevada this was my first experience with the staff of the hospital in the emergency department. I was admitted during the shifts of 7 to 3 and the 3 to 11 shift that I did get to observe and monitor the performance, ethical values and the professionalism of the staff.
I worked in the field of Nursing for 18 years and I know that how demanding that it can be and I know and understand the stress that it can also bring. But there are no excuses for professionalism, you either enjoy your occupation or you do not. Nursing and Law Enforcement are for "specific" individuals, everyone cannot be a Nurse and everyone cannot be a Police Officer.
I observed the ethics of the staff during the time of my visit at the hospital, I was admitted due to having severe chest pains from the upper back. As I was admitted to the hospital, I listened, watched, and evaluated. In any business or daily act of living, a person should always be at their best because you never know who is watching you, so my old saying is " what is in you that is the true you, will be that that will come out and demonstrate itself for who you are from the inside".
As I was admitted into the emergency room during the 7 to 3 shift, the attending nurses and doctors during that time were prompt. The nurses and doctors on that shift introduced themselves and explained the purpose of the procedures and what they were doing thoroughly. When I saw this performance and the action, I felt safe and I felt very secure with that staff, so, 5 stars for that 7 to 3 team.
As the 7 to 3 shift began to change, this is where the chaos began. The doctor who on the first shift came and talked to me about decisions and choices and follow-ups and informed that my results were okay, I was happy and satisfied, 5 stars to that doctor. As the shift changed, I observed a lot of "improper" phone calls on the facility phones that had nothing to do with patient care.
I observed doctors and various nurses pacing the floor having conversations that did not pertain to patient care also, I saw this as an unethical mandate in the presence of patients who are ill and worried about their conditions. The interactions between staff was 50/50, the sociological factors of what needed to be demonstrated as a team for the relaying of patient care information was not in order, but the "playing around and joking" outweighed the professionalism.
As the 7 to 3 shift changed, I was not introduced to my Clinical Nurse Assistant, I was not introduced to the new charge Nurse on Duty and I was not introduced to my new attending doctor. Until I left the hospital there was no introductions. I do understand how busy that hospitals get and that situations can occur that can turn a happy face and smile into a frown, but there is always room for improvements.
My advice during training is to apply more ethical values towards customer service, the paying attention to details and a great display of Nursing Professionalism. When you are attending to human capital, you have to understand that you are the best of the best and you must by all means necessary show the patients that you care.
Also, do not allow two or three minutes for a monitor to sound before it is attended to, this also went on while nurses were standing around unprofessional at the nursing station. Don't let patients sit in the rooms for two or three hours without visiting them and giving them updates on their status and by all means force yourselves to "smile" show happiness and love and compassion, you do not know if a person has lost a loved one or has been abused or raped or lost their jobs, you can make a difference in a persons life.
My experience as my first time at Saint Rose Hospital will give the hospital an 88% evaluation, but there is much room for accuracy, customer service satisfaction and ethical value improvements display of doctors and of nurses. Thank you Saint Rose Hospital for your service to the communities and keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
David E. Brown Sr., Ph.D., B.S., M.S.
