| - Came here for Sunday brunch. It was crowded with a pretty young crowd and loud dancy music. It's like a college bar except it's well-lit and youre there to sit down and eat instead of make regrettable decisions. While I did not find my decision to have brunch regrettable, I did not find myself impressed and wanting to return either.
Let's start with the mimosa. I know people love to go here for bottomless mimosas: 2 hours of all you can drink for $12; that's a bargain! However, I only got one since I'm not a big drinker. The drink tasted kind of cheap (which I was fine with from a place that has to make a profit off of bottomless mimosas), and it was a little warm (yuck!) and not as effervescent as I wouldve liked. To be honest, I'm a craft beer lover, so my opinion on other adult beverages is probably not to be trusted.
For food, I got cheese curds, buffalo chicken nachos, parmesan truffle potatoes, and a burger (I think it was the farmhouse).
The curds are awesome. I think the batter has pickle juice in it because the cheddar curds have a hint of dill pickle. This flavor is really brought out by the dipping sauce that is probably 50% dill by volume. I'd put these curds on my top 5 list in Madison.
The buffalo chicken nachos are pretty decent and filling. You get a big platter of house-made potato chips topped with strips of chicken breast soaking in buffalo sauce, blue cheese, diced tomatoes, and white cheddar sauce for only $9. Pretty good deal, but this was pretty much on par with appetizers at chain restaurants like buffalo wild wings, so I can't say that I loved these nachos.
The potatoes were pretty good. Sizeable cubes of battered and fried potatoes are topped with truffle-flavored cream sauce and melted parmesan cheese. I'm not going to pretend to be some truffle connoisseur and say whether or not the truffle flavor is authentic, but the truffle cream and the parmesan cheese seem to taste like a gradient with tanginess on one end and earthiness on the other. Great flavor pairing! The potatoes are hot, crispy, and just dry enough to take in the sauce nicely.
I am not the biggest fan of burgers, but they were pretty much the only thing on the menu. The toppings on this burger were interesting: bacon, cheese, fried green tomato, baby spring mix, and a sweet tomato jam. This tasted pretty good. The tomato jam provides sweet and acidic flavors to balance out the fatty and salty bacon, cheese, and beef. Still, I can't say this burger is blows me away.
Overall, I thought the food was good, but it wasn't THAT good. With all the brunch options in Madison, Dlux just doesnt seem like a stand out to me. I was going to give it three stars, but I remembered how great my service was. The waitress was fast, friendly, and helpful. She answered all of our questions, and she was accomodating when I wanted to change my fries to breakfast potatoes. I think the awesome service earned another star.
If i ever come back, i will get a milkshake. They look awesome.
