The Venetian
If you haven't been to the Venetian for a stay or just a visit, this review should serve you well. Stayed here many times, always enjoyed the stay, but I'm not going to talk about the rooms. I'm going to talk about the beauty.
Last night I had a late dinner at the Grand Lux situated just off the casino. Always liked this place, the late hours, and its symbiotic connection to the design, intent and purpose of the Venetian. As a side thought, when I think of, The Venetian, I think great, we'll eat at the Grand Lux.
Okay, so the cynics will say the purpose (I just mentioned) of the Venetian is to make money. No, I don't necessarily believe that. There are the exceptions wherein you create something beautiful and the money follows.
I love museums, architecture, and the men and women who create; who risk and built what might even be considered contributions to culture. Placing you in a state of awe is not taking your money. That feeling comes free.
And so I took that walk of mine after dinner, the same walk I've taken through the Venetian, many times. (I often wonder what those in Security are thinking as I do this.) Each time I play the same game and I doubt I'm the only one who does this.
I seek to find a square inch of this place that the Owner didn't put great thought into; if only a minute, irrelevant corner where I could locate an extension cord, or a web of dust; some abandoned, non-specific, unimportant spot in this massive facility which wasn't thought out fully when they built the place.
It's never happened. I couldn't. I can't. The place simply 'is', as if molded and designed and born to be only beautiful. Such a place cannot only be about money. It's not about distraction; cheap Vegas gimmicks; lighting, flashes, or even expensive/massive - still distractions - chandeliers, or hanging fabric you find in other places.
The Venetian is about rock solid beauty. "Rock Solid"... that's The Venetian.
Someone wanted to give us something. Something magnificent. Something beautiful. So if you intend to stay or merely visit, see if you don't feel the difference from the other pushing and shoving to get your money strip locations. Walk though St. Peter's Square and listen to the operatic love songs, sung live and free of charge. Follow the beautiful ceilings, the second floor canals and marvel at how they were built while imagining the look on the architect's face when the Aldelson family suggested such a feat. This is not your daddy's casino, or your grandfather's gambling house. The Venetian, from the Grand Lux to the Palazzo, to the waterfalls in between, and back again needs to be seen. So dress up and feel comfortable. Get away from the Vegas grime and realize there are still places hanging on to their virtues.
