  • My family moved to Surprise from Peoria about a year ago and needed a new dentist for my 8 year old. I was perfectly satisfied with the Every Kids' Dentist location in Peoria but decided to save some gas and give Surprise a try. The front desk staff in Surprise seemed very disorganized which made me feel a little uneasy, but I discounted it assuming they were new. When I met the dental assistant she was welcoming and moved to Surprise from Peoria about a year ago and needed a new dentist for my 8 year old. I was perfectly satisfied with the Every Kids' Dentist location in Peoria but decided to save some gas and give Surprise a try. The front desk staff in Surprise seemed very disorganized which made me feel a little uneasy, but I discounted it assuming they were new. When I met the dental assistant she was welcoming and friendly. While my son was having x-rays a strange woman jumped out from behind me and said, Hello! She was extremely hyper which again led me to feel uneasy. And because she did not introduce herself I was left thinking, who in the world was that? My son was seated as we waited for the dentist. A few minutes passed and the dentist came in the room to introduced herself. To my surprise, it happened to be the strange woman who had approached me from behind in the hallway. Again, she was extremely hyper. She began to examine my son and was giving the assistant, who seemed to know more than the dentist, information to about what she was seeing. She then proceeded to tell me that my son had three cavities. He had only had one other cavity years ago so I was surprised to hear this. I'm naturally a very trusting person but because of the unprofessional staff and the dentist herself I had decided in my mind to get a second opinion. As I waited in the long line to check out almost 10 minutes had passed without the line moving. I quietly mouthed to the receptionist that if I didn't owe anything I would call back to schedule an appointment for the procedure (I just wanted to get out of there). She said the exam and x-rays were free but she wanted me to wait to schedule the appointment. I again told her I would call to reschedule and I took a business card and left. They called later and left a voice mail for me to schedule the appointment and mentioned my son did not get his free electric toothbrush. I wasn't going back there for an electric tooth brush or for anything! I called Every Kids' Dentist in Peoria to schedule an appointment with his previous dentist. I told them the dentist in Surprise said he had 3 cavities but I did not elaborate on the experience. I simply waited for them to request the x-rays so the dentist in Peoria could unknowingly confirm my suspicions. I arrived at my appointment in Peoria where I was told the Surprise office failed to forward the x-rays. No surprise there. They re- x-rayed my son where it was later determined he had no cavities at all. Again, not surprised about their findings. I then explained to my dentist in Peoria what I had experienced at the Surprise location and why I felt it was necessary to get the second opinion. He was very professional and said he could not speak about what another dentist says or does but that he himself determined there were no issues with his teeth. He re-examined him for my peace of mind and once again confirmed there were no cavities. I've seen news reports about dentists doing this to children in order to get big insurance payouts. Pictures of kids with a mouthful of silver caps on baby teeth. I'm so glad I followed my gut and got a second opinion. Next stop... The Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners!
