| - I agree with all the previous reviewers about Campustown being unorganized, rude, unprofessional etc. My roommates and I signed a lease for the 2014-2015 school year for a 4 bedroom. Campustown convinced us to sign individual leases "to protect ourselves." What this really meant was, at the end of the school year, one of our roommates (who we didn't really get along with) was able to sublease her room to a total stranger for the summer without notifying us or gaining our permission to do so. I'm not a lawyer, but this definitely seemed sketchy to us.
At the end of the summer, this subleaser was somehow unaware of move out time and dates and moved out a few hours late. A few weeks later, we received a notice stating that we owed $295 EACH for removal of 20+ bags of trash. That's a total of $1180 for removing garbage? First of all, where can I get a job that pays me that much for merely removing some bags of trash? I have a college diploma and no other job pays this much for such a menial task. Second, when we asked for proof of garbage, we got pictures of this girl's belongings, not trash. We disputed this with their accountant, who surprisingly agreed with us and told us he would remove the charges. However, a couple months later, we got a final notice stating we still owed them and that they would report us to the credit bureau if we didn't pay. When we spoke with a general manager, she told us that the accountant no longer worked for them so the charges still remained. How convenient for them that they probably fired the only person that showed any sympathy to tenants. They then so "graciously" offered us a 30% discount on our fees. Maybe they should invest in some dictionaries because offering a discount on something we don't even owe in the first place is definitely not gracious.
We decided that we could no longer handle this matter by ourselves, and went to Student Legal Services for help. Our attorney sent them a letter stating that their charges were absurd and that per the lease, they should've charged the subleaser a $75 late move out fee. They immediately responded saying that they would then only charge us a $45 cleaning fee, which we found reasonable because many landlords charge a cleaning fee upon move out.
Anyways, we agreed to this but then Campustown Rentals proceeded to ignore any sort of communication we attempted. We ended up not paying them because they kept ignoring us, but it was absolutely ridiculous that we had to go through this ordeal. Yea their apartments are better than living in a frat basement, but definitely not worth it. If you don't want clueless, rude, lying "managers" to suck out your soul along with all your money, live literally anywhere else on campus.
