| - I enrolled my 5 year old son here this summer for their program and have continued on with their after school program because I really like the teachers and the program. Sure, it can get hectic with so many kids running around, but what program isn't? Every time I pick him up there is a pleasant staff member in the room with them (or they are in class with a teacher) and they acknowledge me and get him ready to leave. The dojo smells like any other martial arts room I have been in. Obviously when people are sweating, rolling on mats, etc it's going to get a bit musty-smelling, but I'm sure they clean the mats every day and every time I have gone in the bathroom it is clean. I've seen a lot of different kids programs and how they are run, while this one may not be the most organized it's clear that the owner cares immensely about the students and the reputation of the program and will do what needs to be done to always make improvements.
I initially enrolled my son in the karate program hoping it would help him with some of his issues with impulsivity and controlling his temper. Six months into the program I am pleased with his progress and have noticed an increase in confidence, better ability to listen, more respectful behavior, improvement in memory (I think from memorizing the forms), and much better sportsmanship. He used to be too shy to go in front of the class to do anything, and he has now done his forms in 2 tournaments in front of judges and spectators with confidence. He loves going to class every day and looks forward to earning higher rankings. We have tried soccer, t-ball, gymnastics, and basketball in the past and he lost interest in all of those activities very quickly. This is the only sport/activity that he feels great pride in and wants to continue. I definitely attribute a lot of it to the dedication of the teachers and family feel of all the children in his classes.
The real assets of the program are Sensei Wall and Ms. Hamel. The way they work with the kids is positive yet disciplined. The training, activities and games they do teach lessons that carry over not only to competition but also to real life. You can tell that they truly want to see the children improve and feel great pride as they move up in rank. They aren't going to coddle your children or make everyone a winner in the games, but these are great lessons for the children to learn early on and I truly appreciate it! I love the program and plan to continue enrolling my son here for as long as he wants to keep practicing karate.
