After struggling with the school system and the limited resources schools are able to provide to an average student, I enrolled both my kids in Kumon last August.
My son (1st grade) was struggling with reading and was still in the "learning to read" stage vs. "reading to learn". The school told me he is boy, he will catch up or he may qualify for special services. The schools options were let him struggle or test him for special ed. The daily reinforcement Kumon provides got his reading skills on track. He reads with confidence now and I feel comfortable he is ready to move on to 2nd grade. With the end of the school year rapidly approaching the school tested his reading and were happy to report that he caught up. I told them that is because he has been in Kumon.
My daughter (5th grade) was struggling with math and homework seemed to take forever. She couldn't break her habit of using her fingers to count and second guessed herself on basic math problems. It wasn't until we had her assessed at Kumon that we realized how far behind she really was. The daily reinforcement Kumon provides got her back on track and now her core math skills have greatly improved and she is more confident in doing her normal math homework. I wish I had started her in Kumon years ago!
This program is not a quick fix and it takes commitment and patience on behalf of the parents. It has taken us almost the entire school year to really see all the positive changes. It doesn't take much of my kids time, but it is an everyday program. Our whole family supports it, so even when the kids go to the grandparents house for a sleep over they have to do their Kumon.
Professor T and his staff work great with the kids. I priced out other tutoring options and Kumon is affordable and doesn't try to sell you packages. It worked for us and our kids will be continuing with Kumon.
