| - I had some time to kill yesterday and was in the area, so I took a walk through East Towne Mall. When I lived in Stoughton as a kid, this is the mall we'd come to - often left to run around wild, and weirdly as a celebration of someone's birthday, myself included. Mall parties were where it was at for small-town pre-teens circa 1997.
Anywho, the East Towne Mall of today is unrecognizable from the mall I remember as a kid. They've done a lot to renovate it and seem to be going for a more upscale vibe. There are a few holdouts from back in the day in addition to the anchor stores (Spencer's, Vanity, Bath & Body Works - who, adding to the nostalgia factor, are currently offering discontinued scents like Country Apple and Plumeria), but most of the stores are new to me.
Upsides are that the mall is clean and offers ample space to navigate through; downsides are that the lighting is weirdly dim and the atmosphere almost somber. I don't find the mall all that fun to go to generally, but East Towne has a particularly downer vibe for a place that is in good condition and has nearly every storefront filled. Going is by no means a bad experience, but it also didn't really draw me in, either.
