| - Grew up in Chicago and remember watching spring training baseball on tv thinking "where the heck can those people be in March dressed in shorts and enjoying a baseball game?" Moved to Phoenix this year and have found the place! Read all the Yelp reviews and most of the negative ones seem to come from folks that are not Cub fans. Sloan Park is really awesome. Seeing all the horror stories about parking, we decided to get there early (like 9:30am for a 1pm game) and so some tailgating. This was the first Saturday game of the year and when we got there we were only the second car in the grassy lot. We came from North Phoenix and took the 101 to the 202 and exited at Dobson....that is the way to go for sure. The first lot on your right after you get off the 202 is $5. We opted for the grass so we could pull out the grill, sunshade, coolers, lawn chairs, bean bags and radio. It was really awesome. If you are hoping to park closer to where the practice fields are you should keep heading down Dobson OR take the 101 to Rio Slaudo. There is parking closer to the practice fields but not sure how much or the cost....I heard $10 which is a steal as well. In our lot, there were portable restrooms a short distance away and they were very clean. The tailgate crowd was friendly (of course) and fun. We wrapped up our tailgate and decided to head in at about 11:30 (for a 1:05 start) since we had lawn seats and wanted a good spot. It was about 1/4 mile walk to the stadium and there were plenty of rickshaw type folks you could pay to take you to the door but the walk was very easy.
Got right in, plopped our blankets down in left center and walked around the park which was starting to fill up. TONS of food and drinks but since we ate at the tailgate we mostly drank beer (and water). Kilt Lifter on tap (I know, I know, Old Style is the thing...which you could find in the park but the local Four Peaks product is sooooo much better). 20 oz beers were $9...I thought about average. If you cant afford $9 beer you should really just stay home or don't drink...don't complain. Prices were on par or a little cheaper than a game at Wrigley (except parking....$5!! what a deal!!). The reviews about there not being enough scoreboards, pitch counts, pitch speed, ball/strike, etc, etc...are correct. This is the only negative. How much could it possibly cost to put a radar gun out there an a few more scoreboards with appropriate stats. If you sit in the grass there is no shade...lucky for us, there was good cloud cover. You NEED sunscreen, hat and water. I will also suggest a blanket with some type of water barrier. We all had a bad case of "ass wet" from the combination of it being just....well, warm plus the grass has to be watered to stay green so there is some moisture coming up from below. I will bring one of those blue tarps next time. Place was packed....may have been a new record. Left in the 8th inning and did not wait for even one car, got right out, no waiting and was happily on 101 in about 5 min. I have tickets to all the weekend games this year and if anything changes, I will refresh my post but if you are a Cub fan, this is a GREAT place to watch a game and thaw out!
