| - Just read some of the reviews and can't believe someone referred to as the Eurorail of Canada! We took the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver and it was a disaster. First of all the train was very late - we were supposed to board at 10 but didn't get on till 1:30 and I don't believe we left until about 4 a.m. Something I didn't know, was that CPR owns the tracks, so if a freight train is coming, it takes priority, and VIA must wait until it passes. This can take over an hour, and it seemed to happen at least 4 or 5 times per day. We normally would have got off in Winnipeg, to spend some timein the market and see the city, which I was looking forward to, but couldn't as they had to make up time. Again in Edmonton & arrived at Jasper in the dark. You guessed it - rode through the Rockie's in the dark! The whole purpose of taking the train, was to go through the Rockies and we didn't even see them. At times we were 12 hours behind. Arrived in Vancouver almost 10 hours late. The staff couldn't have been better, the food was excellent, and I appreciate all that they did for us. I think Via is giving us 50% of our travel portion - not going to help see the Rockies is it?
