  • Carol Mullins is quite an amusing, fun lady with impeccable style (acid-wash pleated jeans, anyone?), but alas this does not make up for Mullins Apartments. Three friends and I shared a nicely-sized 3 bedroom on East Johnson. It was relatively cheap, and remarkably the heat was included! We were also able to paint our rooms, and the unit had unique older characteristics, which made it a little more fun than any other standard apartment. But, damn! That place was a slum. It was constantly cold in the winter, and occasionally our furnace would go out. There was the nastiest most worn carpet I had ever set foot on. Occasionally we could hear dripping from the unit above onto the ceiling - quite mysterious and unsettling. One hot water heater was shared through the whole building, so whether or not we'd get hot showers was up in the air. Finally, one morning the ceiling in the large bedroom started to crumble. Yes, it literally fell from above onto a dresser. I'm pretty sure that shouldn't happen. They did fix it. Okay, okay, okay...I will say that Mullins was good about getting repairs done in a timely manner, and in many respects weren't terrible landlords. Plus, you get what you pay for. But is it wrong for me to expect that we can have some standards of living set for the quality of the apartments? Now that I have lived in other places, I know better to never go back to something so cheap and terrible. Thanks for the adventure, Mullins.
