  • When it comes to larger gourmet-centric grocery stores in the Phoenix area, I much prefer going to AJ's rather than trekking to Whole Foods. The feel is a little more local, the stores aren't overwhelmingly gigantic, and the selections are usually just as good. Prices for normal groceries here are pretty high, which is why I only dropped in for a few staples not easily found at places like Safeway or Fry's. However, the four stars is for their hot deli counter and their beer section. This AJ's has a fantastic bottle selection and features some beers that not even the largest Whole Foods in AZ carries. Prices are very fair on individual bottles, too, making this a destination for any downtown Phoenix beer geek.
