| - Where to begin.Maybe a stay of a week or 2, might be okay..but beyond that..no..Skilled nursing facilities are all depressing to start. This one appeared to be on the better side and didn't smell as bad as others. We ended up at this facility after one day at another. Please trust me when I say we are FAR from high maintenance people. However, the first facility we ended up at could not even function.
Our mom suffered a spinal injury in a fall while on vacation. When she arrived back in phoenix, she could basically only wiggle 2 toes..she spent 6 weeks at banner intense therapy, learning slide board transfers, using a high tech wheelchair and basically re learning EVERYTHING she ever knew. She was extremely weak..wobbly, could barely move and the therapy team at Banner was AMAZING!
Back to Scottsdale rehab...So after her stay at banner she was sent to skilled nursing. The first place did not have a hoyer lift which was ABSOLUTELY necessary. They told us they did...hence the reason we moved.. the first hour at Scottsdale Rehab was GREAT compared to what was experienced at other facility..please know when nurses and cna's are present they are nice.
OK so fast forward...She spent about 3 months in scottsdale nursing and rehab. They NEVER once practiced slide board with her..they just dragged her from place to place by the sling under her. They would use the hoyer to get in wheelchair but dragged her from chair to therapy table after that... I asked many times for slide board practice and NADA! Therapy was kind of a joke for her..she lost anything gained at Banner during those 6 weeks. People weren't kidding when they told us not to expect anything near like what she recently received, therapy wise..
The CNAs were nice but were always calling out..they were always understaffed. They were always waiting for people to arrive from registry...and who suffers? YEP all the patients! Meds were very late on numerous occasions. Yet its hard to prove since they hand write in (lie) what time the meds were given..nothing electronic here..Oh and never gave my mom a name bracelet either..On the third day of her stay the cart nurse came in with Virginias meds..My moms name is NOT Virginia.. Good thing she is coherent!
I argued with head staff on countless occasions. They were pretty rude. And don't believe the sign on the wall that you can call the director at any time with concerns. They could care less. The last phone call I had with them, they were extremely nasty.. Telling me how they think our time should be done, she is paralyzed and cant do anything blah blah blah..this was after my mom said she fell backwards in therapy and nobody supported her..of course they all had a different story...Anyways...
About 2 months or so into our stay you could tell they were up for their medicare review. They were cleaning offices, organizing files, and were staffed...imagine that.. Numerous times my mom voiced her opinion and complaints...(many patients there cant..but she could and DID!) She often used her cell to call the front desk for her meds, for a bedpan, and for them to remove the bedpan that they never came back for... she would press the button and people would not show up..She documented her experiences daily.... We knew her time would be up soon bc she COULD voice her opinion and well they wouldn't want her there when medicare came for their review.
So yep..one day I was told her time was up bc she is no longer progressing and medicare wont cover her stay anymore. That she has plateaued on her progress and there is nothing more they can do for her. Her last covered day would be XX.... Thats fine..we had a plan...She was accepted back to banner for a "tune up" so to say before coming home...6 more weeks of intense rehab followed by outpatient therapy that we currently still do.GUESS WHAT..SHE NOW WALKS!! (please remember they kicked her out bc they claimed she was done progressing and if she wanted to stay it was private pay) Yes, Shes in wheelchair most the time but can get up and walk itty bitty steps!! NO thanks to Scottsdale rehab where she LOST all she gained at her original trip to banner... yes..we have assessments to prove what she gained originally and lost. And the progress since LEAVING Scottsdale rehab is just amazing...(and medicare still covers it..so all BS at this facility) The best thing we did was finally get out of there and back to a REAL therapy facility. You probably wonder why we stayed so long..well ya see...while it is a crap facility..it was one of the better crap facilities and we were just waiting to sell her house, sell my house, close on a bigger house, and get her back to intense rehab RIGHT BEFORE coming home...so lots of things had to line up and fall into place..I could go on and on about all the things that went on here...unfortunately its better than other nursing home facilities but it still sucks. You need to be aware of what is going on and let them know you are paying attention.
