| - I loved everything, not just the cheesecake.
Gotta Love Cheesecake is a small shop in a small plaza near a Station Casino (Santa Fe) in a part of town that's distant from me. The decor is somewhat homey and only the proprietor was working on this Saturday afternoon. This was all just the perfect setup for a wonderful food find.
I didn't catch it on my own, but based on other reviews, I'm sure Kathy was the name of the nice lady who told this first-timer all about her pastries and patiently waited for me to arrive at my decision. Not only is she easygoing and charming, but she threw in an extra cookie (to an admittedly hefty order) to even out the cookie flavors.
There were several flavors of their 4" cheesecake in the display (I'd assume that larger sizes are available for special order). Judging from reviews and from the cheesecake flavor list near the register, they rotate flavors on a regular basis. Although I was tempted to grab one of everything, I eventually chose the classic cheesecake and the mudslide cheesecake.
Like others suggest, I don't think you can go around with any flavor. The only real compromise was between my taste buds and my wallet. Both of these babies are at least on par with any other cheesecake that I've had. They are moist and rich, and they easily yield to a fork or a sweet tooth. The classic cheesecake is aptly named and really stands up on its own, while the mudslide delights the tongue with both classic and chocolate layers, plus some Bailey's flavor. The classic's crust is a little thicker than the mudslide's, but both takes really worked for me.
The carrot cake in the cold case looked alluring as well, and at $1.50 for a large slice (the last one at that), it was an irresistibly good value. It's a moist cake that has both carrot flavor and diet-destroying frosting. It also has a sweet surprise in the form of raisins. It's almost unfair to the cheesecake that it's such a budget-friendly option, but I'd order both in the future if possible.
I also couldn't pass up on the cookies at their price ($1.50 for 3). She had peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies available, which she explained were respectively her son's and daughter's favorites. I'm not sure if she wasn't joking a bit, but she told me that she always has to bake them, lest she give one child or the other evidence of favoritism.
The cookies are on the thinner side, which is consistent with the pricing. The peanut butter had plenty of peanut butter flavor and skewed toward crunchy (with a little chew in the middle). The chocolate chip was as delicious in flavor as any, and while it's not as gooey as I'd like, I'm sure it's as good as you can get for such a thin package.
Gotta Love Cheesecake is the kind of dessert shop that I'd want on my side of town. I live clear across town, but I'm starting to fantasize about calling them to ask about their cheesecake flavors of the day and making the long drive, or maybe putting in a special order on a special occasion.
