  • I love little Ice Cream shops that debut the pure unadulterated awesomeness that frozen cream can provide in creative new ways. Jeni's has been the top ice cream spot in my heart since I first went 4 years ago for this reason, but this place gave it a real run for the money, and in one or two more visits it just might overtake it. If you haven't been to either, this kind of shop doesn't do sundae's or throw a bunch of topping's on your ice cream. Your options basically consist of which flavors to pair, how much you want, and whether you want to eat out of a cone or a bowl (I go bowl most of the time, guess I am just that snobby over the purity of the cream!). What they lack in interesting toppings they make up for ten fold by actually crafting their ice cream in unique, creative, and even artistic ways with an awesome creamy texture and attention to every detail. And the best part is that they are happy to let you try many flavors before making a final decision! At Churned my taste buds were delighted by the red velvet cake, the blood orange sorbet, and the Mexican hot chocolate, but I had to make a decision and went with the Garden Mint Stracciatella and the Campfire. While the Garden Mint hosted the same flavor components as a typical mint chocolate chip, it was one of the most unique ice creams I have tried! It was an herbal garden of flavors where fresh mint showed through the brightest but was far from the only herbal note to the cream, and the quality and texture of the chocolate was unlike anything you'll find in the freezer isle. The Campfire was a smokey chocolaty sensation with wonderful texture added by the graham crackers, and together the two took me to the center of garden bizarre where I was making marshmallows over a bonfire and under the shade of mint terraces. It was awesome. I'll definitely be back, and am so glad to have a place like this so close to my neighborhood now. Sweet Moses is good stuff, but it doesn't compare.
