Spirit Tree Estate Cidery was the first Cidery I have ever been to and it set the bar pretty high. The location was in a farm area within Caledon which was understandable given the main ingredient needs to be farmed in order to create cider. On the tour we were taken on, there were rows of trees that had around 36 different types of apple trees which were mixed and matched to create different types of cider sold in their store/restaurant. The owner, who took us on the tour was quite informative and explained the process of the creation of cider and the history behind cider. He also explained how his business came to be which gave us a more personal experience and more appreciation for the work it took to create the cider. Not to mention his business was quite eco-friendly through the use of mulch that was broken down from old skids and dead trees. The building was actually built with straw which was quite impressive, and hard to believe.
We got to sample some cider at the bar, which was quite refreshing. The ciders had a great range of tastes. Some being on the sweeter side to others being a bit more dry and hoppy. To my surprise they had food, and i was even more amazed that it was pretty good given that it was a cidery. They had bread with a large variety of dips. Great to soak up the alcohol if you had one too many ciders. Everything was great at Spirit Tree, I would have just suggested that they had an updated list of ciders available on the wall when I was there. Id say if you are in the Caledon area, give this place a visit for a great tour and a great selection of consumables. JimStar Out!!
