| - So I went to the Mint this weekend to check out the closing exhibit "Fairytales, Fantasy and Fear". While I enjoyed the exhibit, there was so much more to this museum that appealed to me.
First off, admission is reasonable here. They do run occasional specials on admission and they network with the other area museums so your sticker from the mint will get you a discount at the Bechtler.
The "Fairytales, Fantasy and Fear" exhibit featured a forest of trees made from PVC pipe. Very creative!! Other highlights include a lighthouse structure in the shape of a giraffe, a person made out of metal flowers, knitted super hero costumes and a toro mask made out of glass.
I really enjoyed the Craft and Design part of the museum. There were amazing creations of glass, wood, fiber and furniture. One furniture cabinet had pencils in the area where a window would be in the door.
In the Special collections area there was an exhibit of Madeline Albright's Pin collections. Every pin has a story and the pins included those of various themes including flags, insects, musical instruments, alien life, gems of every sort, and more. This was a very fascinating exhibit.
Also in the special collections is an exhibit by Thornton Dial which included massive pieces themed from events throughout time and created with discarded materials including paint cans, metal wires, plastic, dolls, and so much more. This was a very interesting exhibit.
In the permanent collections you had the more traditional art including portrait painting, furniture, clothing, throughout time. There ware collections from Romare Beardon who was born in Charlotte and Matthew Weinstein. Weinstein's work included a film, with the voice of actress Natasha Richardson, which helped me to understand some of the other pieces in the collection.
There is also a large gift shop at street level of the museum.
This is a great museum and I'm glad to see it was built. It compliments the other museums uptown.
