| - So, the concept behind HALO is a good one, but I cannot believe the horrendous process and lack of customer service at this place. Remember - we go there because we want to ADOPT an animal! I have adopted from other shelters before and most recently AHS and had nothing but wonderful experiences. NOT SO with HALO.
Let's start with the beautiful dog that I would love to adopt that was picked up as a stray and taken to county. Ok...so I'm watching this dog for three days to see if anyone claims him and no, he's still there four days later. I call to ask and am told that HALO has already claimed him. So..he goes from a $75.00 adoption fee to $185. Well, OK - I can deal with that. Our 17 year old dog died recently and we really wanted this one, so I start calling.
I call and call and call - the phone rings and rings and rings. I try this twice with no answer. I call a third time and FINALLY someone answers the phone. I give her the dog's number from county because he's not on their site yet and she looks him up and says two people already have applications on him! What? How does that even happen? Nope - can't do another one - that's all they take. Keep checking back.
Two days later I decide to go in. He's listed on their website as adoptable - that should mean he's up for adoption. I go in and wait for 10 to 15 minutes before someone even acknowledges my presence. I tell them who I want to see, she writes numbers down on a piece of paper and then gives me a Meet and Greet form to fill out. I wait another 30 minutes - anxious to get to see this cutie pie and finally a very sweet girl comes out to let me know that there are already two applications on this dog and she can't even let me meet him. So - technically, he's not adoptable even though their website says that. So, what can I do? She says he's scheduled to be neutered the next day and it's a 7 to 10 day hold after that or some story like that. No one seems to have any real answers.
Fast forward 8 days. I keep watching the website and he's still there. We take a trip first to AHS Campus for Compassion and have a wonderful, positive experience looking at well cared for dogs in air conditioned kennels, but don't find want that speaks to the heart like the one at HALO. So - we drive there.
Once again, walk in and wait for a few minutes to be greeted, hearing them talk to a senior man about his dog that was a stray and they now have - holding his dog hostage for hundreds of dollars just because he didn't find his dog at MCCAC within the stray hold time period. The man says he doesn't have the money and apparently there is nothing he can do. Do they really wait the 72 hours???
We approach the desk and the same people from 8 days ago are there. I tell them who we're inquiring about. She writes the number down wrong and pulls up a different dog. I tell her no, and she writes it down again and then goes to a file cabinet to pull the info. She asks my name and a coworker asks if I've filled out an application. I tell them I filled one out online - but I HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANY RESPONSE. She says well, there are two people already applied for this dog and again we aren't even allowed to meet this poor dog.
So, here is a stray dog who has been kenneled now for 13 days since he was picked up and has ZERO human interaction. He's being held prisoner. I ask what can i do and they go through trying to explain their very complicated, completely unfriendly process. My only option is to keep contacting them to see if #1 or #2 want him. I can't find out if I can even be #3....We went ahead and walked through the place to look around. Dogs are crowded - 4 to a kennel or in very small kennels. It smells, some are covered with flies. Noone - and I mean noone - was as friendly as the individuals at AHS and THIS PLACE GETS FIRST PICK from county. What a crock...
They need to be shutdown and replaced with someone who actually wants to help dogs - not prevent them from being adopted.
