| - Tried to update my review, and I'm not sure where it went... so, here we go again.
I went in recently, interested in selling some old jewelry I don't like any more... 14k, 18k, platinum, diamonds, sapphires. I saw the ad on TV... "I pay more than the scrap people because I need YOUR jewelry for MY showroom." Ha ha. Some of the items, more recent purchases that just didn't suit me... I always take them to a pawn shop whenever I buy off eBay, "interested in selling them" just to easily verify they are genuine and as presented.
As for E. D. Marshall's stellar top-dollar-paid prices, I had Vegas Pawn in South Scottsdale offer me double to nearly triple on a handful of items when I had them checked out in June and July (and we all know pawn shops are skimpy on payout). Yes, the economy has arguably worsened, but gold has risen in price since then. And the E. D. Marshall buyer offered less than a pawn shop? Pffft.
With the exception of the HIGHLY deceptive "top dollar paid" commercial, the rest of the buying process was great. The buyer I spoke with was knowledgeable, sensitive, respectful, and quite nice.... even conversational. If I had to rate just the buyer I spoke with... A+. I was a bit surprised how pressure-free and easy it was. The buyer didn't offer to add on $10 and act like it was a favor, or openly feed off of desperation like many scrap buyers and pawn shops do. There was no condescension... I left wishing they would have offered more, because I would have sold if they had.
Luckily, I don't need the money and was doing a bit of a test run since I am considering getting rid of a lot of jewelry I just don't wear, so I can buy something I will like more. I'm glad I didn't need to really consider the offer. But, I know for the future, I will sell elsewhere. I could have easily gotten double on every single item in a day flat on Craigslist.
PART 2: BUYING JEWELRY
Wow, do they have some seriously impressive items. Though I was disappointed in being mislead by the buying process, I am still happy I went in because their selection is fabulous. They actually do have a bit of a selection of vintage/antique/estate jewelry, mostly early-to-mid 20th century, but I saw a few items that were definitely late 1800s. Only a few cases, and other items here and there.
I was impressed with their vintage fine jewelry selection. It's not often you see such a nice collection of items such as those in one place. I would definitely look again. The sales people were also very nice... attentive, but not pushy or annoying. And though I was certainly under-dressed for their usual clientele, I received excellent service without a second glance as to my attire.
However, I probably would not buy. Their price tag is too high. Before making that a solid statement, I would have to try to negotiate with them (since we all know the price on the tag is not their bottom line). I'm not sure how much farther down their bottom line price is, but it would still have to be a ways for me to consider. I love fine jewelry, but I can't talk myself into paying such a premium when I could buy a very similar item for half as much at even an antique shop. If I ever buy anything there, I will have to either win the lottery, stay true to my Scottsdale roots and marry rich, or find something for my collection that I can't find anywhere else and HAVE to own.
Average of 3 stars (though I was tempted to give them 4)... Low because I'm still overly disappointed in their misleading commercial and the fact that I've had a pawn shop offer more than they did (especially since they're reselling at such a PRICEY premium). Everything else in the store was absolutely stellar (aside from the price tags!!). The service, selection... everything... was top notch.
PS - for you watch aficionados out there, they have a seriously impressive high-end watch selection.
