My husband and I just purchased season tickets for the broadway series and this was our first show. It was Cabaret. First of all, we left Scottsdale at 530 for a 730 show. Due to an accident, no fault of ASU, we arrived after the parking lot closest to the venue had closed and parked at the other free lot at university and mill ave.. This worked out very well for us because we enjoy a bit of a walk and the weather was not overly hot.
We arrived at Gammage at 630 or so and had an hour before the show. We purchased wine in the lobby. Unfortunately, they do not provide any seating or tables other than to sit on the steps to the balcony. you are able to take food and drink into the theatre.
The problem was that once the show started, you couldn't hear anything but garble. I thought it might be just us, but everyone around us had difficulty. My seat mates and I went to guest services for hearing assists but had to return 2 other times in an attempt to resolve the issue. The Aids were staticky at best and garbled otherwise. It was so annoying to have to "listen" through these devices. The 4 people next to us left at intermission as well as many in the surrounding area due to the problems with the sound. I missed most of the first act trying to resolve the issue. The second act was better but far from being enjoyable. I do not have a hearing problem so having to use these aids takes away from the theatrical experience.
When we returned the devices, I was informed that there had been a
sound problem with the first act which was somewhat resolved in The second. The people handling the devices were kind and apologetic although it was clearly not their fault. I am seriously questioning the decision to purchase season tickets based on this experience. BEWARE.
