  • OK, this is going to disgrace me I am sure. After posting this none of you will think I have a half wit about me. Perhaps your assessment of me will be accurate BUT I dare to challenge you to look beyond the surface for a deeper appreciation of the GM. Yes the Galleria Mall is unappealing to the eye. Yes there are some odd trinket stores and kiosks here and I have no beef with the description of some of the shady characters hanging around this quiet unpretentious mall. I grew up in Kingston and the more I think about it the more this mall reminds me of the Frontenac Mall in my hometown 30 years ago. It had a Zellers in the same end of it's mall; it's decor was similar to the Galleria and you felt the same odd / sad feeling as I notice here. When we first moved into the hood 4 years ago our Realtor said the Galleria was supposed to be knocked down. I remember thinking it couldn't happen soon enough. Just looking at that place made me want to take a shower. Well, time and my situation has allowed me to go beyond what I may see as unfortunate design and lack of care to being able to hold this mall in great appreciation. Here is my case FOR the Galleria... It has a Zellers, YAY Zellers! I love saving on kid clothes and finding all sorts of things I forgot I needed like soap and underwear and sewing supplies. I can go to Price Chopper, YAY Price Chopper! I used to think PC was so skid. With a tight budget now-a-days I forced myself to shop there (sometimes). You want to know what the difference is? Less brands to choose from. Big deal, I can save $20 - $40 per shop, I can get down with that! A pharmacy - like the time my son was 2 years old, I was very pregers and had to walk to a pharmacy that would likely have the electrolyte for kids so he could gain strength after puking all nite - GM's Pharmaplus had it! We didn't have a car then so I had to walk in the blowing cold snow. It was a life saver. Did I mention the post office? Did you know as big and popular as the Duff is there is no post office!? And where else can I go in my neighborhood for a TD Bank? No where else I tell you. When the Dufferin Mall's S&H Health Food store was often out of the crucial herbs I needed to produce milk for my daughter's first year of life, GM's supplement store ALWAYS had it. Need I go on? Oh yeah and the liquor store and pet store are there too. My only concern with the GM is feeling a little out of place and more likely to get unwanted attention by the crowd that generally hangs around this place. Nothing bad just stares at my red boots and glances cast from guys hanging around in the evening when I am walking alone with my Zellers scores to the car in the parking lot. In conclusion if you fancy yourself a deeper person than someone who needs surface pleasures to complete their existence I say give this place another chance. I think of it as a hidden gem and sometimes even a lifesaver.
