  • Always ask the locals where they eat. Always ask former locals where they eat now they're not near their hometown digs. Case in point: I asked my work pal who is a Cajun transplant where he goes to scratch his itch for New Orleans cuisine. Without a hitch, he said: "Lola's!" I said: "All right, all right, all right!" Getting here is kind of tricky. The best method from the freeway is to take the I15 Northbound and exit the Charleston exit south and dive into the first driveway opening on the right and find the first parking spot available. The next best ways are to approach on Charleston from west to hit that driveway or take Grand Central Pkwy going north to south and drive straight into the driveway to the parking lot. You cannot make a left facing west to get in to the parking lot. Accommodations included indoor and patio dining. Indoor dining is small space that has a sports bar feel with wide screens on the walls. We should have made reservations but the waitress was very cool and gave us a seat right away. Decor all over is NoLA fun and party ready. We went family style eating off each other's orders and requested of the kitchen the Char-Broiled Oysters, Bronzed Shrimp & Grits, Jambalaya-Chicken & Sausage with extra sausage, and Fettuccine Alfredo with blackened shrimp. Let's start with the oysters. First, I do not like oysters in general. These I will eat. About grits, I am not a fan of grits either. To use my dinner friend's phrase: "The grits were a revelation." They were very creamy and went well with the shrimp and other food on our plates. Other highlights included the table favorite jambalaya (everything on that was perfect) and blackened shrimp fettuccine (nothing too oily nor overcooked; the pasta was fresh, al dente tasty and shrimp followed suit). No missteps here. The clean, orderly presentation was a great touch. What's my bottom line? My friend was right. This is the best place to get your down home Louisiana fix at. Great food, quaint atmosphere, sports game on the widescreen, southern hospitality in a western state. The experience made a limited Cajun skeptic like me into a NoLA cuisine believer. I've got to get the red beans and rice next time. My work friend swears by them. My actual rating is a solid 4.6 stars...
