If you want a non-corporate coffee with fresh homemade pastry and healthier snacks that the corporate cookie cutter a few yards away, this is it for the Pleasantville area of the Beaches strip.
I had a delicious crock-monsieur, with melted cheese, ham and greens, and just the right amount of mayo and mustard in a crispy white bun -- all very tasty. My Americano was also just fine.
A few suggestions. Be authentically French without being quite so stand-offish in dealing with customers. People want coffee and pastry with a smile on the side.
Offer a whole grain option in sandwiches. Offer fair trade coffee option. Try to make the sit-down section a little more autonomous from the line-up at the cash register so people will feel more relaxed and less in-the-way.
In my e-book, Food for City Building, I stress the importance of independent coffee shops for neighborhood building, and I'd like to see if Zane's could play that role -- great place for people walking home and looking for a place to pop into for a snack.
