  • My review is mixed...I have had two experiences with Mayo. One was for a dog bite my mother in law sustained. They did a great job. Bed side manner of the ER doc on the second visit was not so great but I really don't care because he identified the complication and got the job done. My second visit for stitches above my son's upper lip was also good in terms of competency and outcome. However when I inquired about the stitches being removed, as it was required within 5 days, I was told I would incur an additional charge. So I sought the help of our pediatrician, who informed me that they would charge higher urgent care rates as it would be a Saturday. Then I called the urgent care, who initially referred me to the ER due to the laceration's location (I did not just run to the ER), and they would charge me an additional fee of $120 to get the stitches removed, even though I had already paid for them to say, you need to go to the ER. So I ordered a pair of suture removal scissors for $5 from Amazon and with rubbing alcohol and a little faith from my 7 year old son, I removed the stitches myself. The scar is minimal so I am, again, happy with the outcome but frustrated with the process. Needless to say, I have changed pediatrician's office because of their lack of care and compassion. I have since shared my story with the new pediatrician's office and they informed me that Mayo was obligated to remove the stitches, as prescribed, at no additional charge. After all, they applied stitches that required subsequent removal. I would like this addressed. I am a patient and understanding person and I do not fault the Mayo employees for any wrong doing. But I would like to know what exactly my patient rights are under this circumstance. The driving factor of course is the fact that our insurance has a huge deductible and our HSA is only what we contribute, no employer matching. So our healthcare is out of pocket until catastrophe. PS, the ER visit cost us almost $1200. That's right, 3 stitches for $1200 and removal was extra, as I was informed by the ER nurse. This is the cost of healthcare for us now. I wish John McCain and family well but I am almost certain that he did not pay as much for brain surgery as we have for 3 stitches, sans removal. Should Mayo have offered removal of the 3 stitches at no additional charge? Our new pediatrician suggested it would be unethical to charge. I would have called and asked the billing department over the phone but I purposefully used this forum to do so instead, because I want other people to hear my story, and hopefully see the response.
