  • When one mentions spinning to me, the lyrics "you spin me right round, baby right round" pop into my head and then I follow that up with thoughts of a sore tushy. I have deep thoughts, what can I tell ya? Flywheel is a completely unique experience when it comes to spinning. Yes, you still get a sore tushy but you are so focused on your performance that the butt pain won't kick in until long after you've left the building. The building is located right off of Providence road in the shopping center that has a FedEx office, Chipotle, Poppy's bagels, etc. When you come in, you will be greeted by the Flywheel staff (the woman I spoke with when I arrived was super friendly and showed me around) and three laptops where you 'sign' in and confirm your bike reservation. You are also given your spin shoes if you haven't bought your own. I'm a size 5 shoe which is not listed as a choice on the website, so fellow small-footed women, have no fear they have your size in stock! You then make your way around where you can use the bathroom, use one of the changing rooms which are stocked with canisters of bobbie pins and hair elastics (I'm sorry, that is A HUGE FREAKIN FANTASTIC DEAL to me), and/or refill your water bottle from their machine that allows you to choose cold or room temperature water. There are lockers that allow you to choose your own electronic code so no need to bring a lock. Just remember what you punched in! After all of that pre-class jazz, it's time to FLY! The bikes have the numbers on the front and the room setup is very close to how its shown online when you make your bike reservation. Since this was my first time, I had no idea how to adjust my bike. Thankfully, the woman next to me went above and beyond and helped me adjust everything and get my shoes locked into place. The instructor (Matt Y was there on my first night) takes position, lights dim and class starts. As someone who is admittedly out of shape (I have a small frame but I am not fit at all), I found that the class went by so quickly! I huffed and puffed my way through it and chose to remain seated during the standing-up parts. For my fellow newbies, I advise you to pace yourself. There is no race and no need to try to 'show off' because nobody can see you. Once class is over, your performance is emailed to you so you can track your progress. Flywheel is a great way to mix up your typical workout regime and will push you to your limits and then some! The only negative for me is the pricing but I completely understand the need for the cost so that they can continue to keep a roof over all of the fancy stuff inside. Give it a shot, the first class is free.
