| - We were recommended to this restaurant and were told that this is an authentic Northern Thai restaurant.
We have a party of four and did not make reservation on Christmas day and we waited for 1 hour. The wait did not bother us but the restaurant did.
First, the ambiance - this is nothing but more than a regular Thai restaurant in any of the US cities. It is a large, noisy, and very crowded setting in a banquet hall. Seats are very uncomfortable, some chairs are even rocking and we were fearful that it could break in any given time. Very plain setting on the table, with one fork and paper napkin. This is certainly not a fine dining restaurant.
The decor of this place is also very plain. Only a few pictures and some ribbons hanging in a on the walls. Feels like eating in a mess hall.
A bare minimum service level is provided. Our waiter came to take our order and offered us some suggestions. The dishes were presented to us by the carriers and the waiter checked back with us only once. Water was never refilled.
Now the food. We ordered:
1. Golden Tofu as an appetizer - these are cubes of tofu deep fried. Indeed these are chunks of tender tofu, unfortunately, it has zero flavoring. One must use the accompanying sauce ( a sweet lime sauce ) for flavoring. Many other Thai restaurants can do a better job. Price of this dish is $7.95. Grade B-.
2. Garlic Prawn deep fried - there are 6 pcs of shrimp, size 16 to 20, The shells comes with this dish and they are deep fried solidly and are crispy. Unfortunately, it is slightly too greasy,
In addition, the shrimp is not flavorful and is slightly over fried. Price of this dish is $27.95. Grade C.
3. Crispy Duck in a curry sauce - there are about 12 pcs of thinly sliced duck breast in a coconut cream yellow curry sauce. This is the best dish of the evening. The sauce is great over rice and the duck breast is tender. If you like Thai yellow curry sauce, you will love this dish. Price is $27.95. Grade A.
4, Kang Hung Lay - Pork stew in a northern Thai curry sauce. Small chunks of pork along with one large piece of pork belly simmered in a curry sauce. Very flavorful, but the meat is not tender. Price is $17.95. Grade C.
5. Mua Yum Kattie - grilled strips of beef in a sweet and sour Thai sauce. Beef is quite tasty but kind of tough. Price is very reasonable at $10.95. Grade B-.
In addition, we ordered two Thai ice coffee which is quite well done. Grade A.
The food bill came to $102+. Then they add a mandatory 18% service charge in addition to the local tax. The total is then $130.
All in all, the food is OK and acceptable. I will recommend this place to my friends if only they can accept the mandatory 18% service charge, zero ambiance, below acceptable service level and the high price they charge on the food,
