If I could use only one word to describe The Hostile Grape it would be wonderful. Upon entering this hidden jewel of a wine bar I was instantly taken by the modern minimalist decor. The lighting is low and set with a soft glow of purple. Very much a romantic, intimate atmosphere. Being that it was our first visit we were told by our very friendly and helpful server about the different wine stations. You purchase a card and load up the amount you want (min is $25). You then have the choice of a 1oz pour, 5oz pour (glass), or the entire bottle. The wines are organized by types and each bottle is displayed on a round table. After you enter your card, you select the wine and size you would like and the machine dispenses it. My date and I enjoyed sampling the different wines and decided to put $50 on our cards. The 1oz pours range anywhere from $2.50 to $15. $50 will give you a nice buzz but don't expect to get smashed unless you're sticking with the cheapest selections.
After an hour of sampling we decided on a bite to eat. The Hostile Grape has a small plate menu. We each ordered a bowl of clam chowder and split an order of calamari. It was probably one of the best bowls of clam chowder I've had. The calamari was also delicious with a light, airy batter. It was seasoned with pepper and had a side of creamy tarragon (?) sauce.
Hostile Grape also has a full bar if wine isn't your preference. You can also order wine by the glass or bottle if trying the different stations isn't your thing. There's plenty of comfortable couches to lounge on. If you're seeking a quiet, swanky, and intimate setting away from the lights and buzz of the casino then this is definitely your place. I know it's my new favorite place.
