| - Ordered carry-out from Silk Elephant last night and was not really impressed. We are new to Pittsburgh and have a lot of restaurants to try, so I think it will be quite a while before we give this place another shot.
We didn't eat in the restaurant so I can't really comment on service or decor very much. However, in general, we thought the food was overpriced, underspiced, and small portions for the price. We paid $35 for an order of spring rolls, panang curry and the traditional ginger entree.
Pros: Spring rolls were very good. Order was ready to be picked up in 15 minutes and was hot when I got it. Very nice service over the phone, repeated order back to me so they did't get it wrong.
Cons: The entree portions were small and there was very little protein in them - we both ordered beef and my husband's panang curry had like, two pieces of beef in it. For ~13-15 dollars an entree, I expect more protein. The spice levels here go from 1-10. We both like really spicy stuff, but also want it to be edible & since we didn't know this place, thought we would be safe - so we got a 7 and an 8. There was almost NO spice at all. We had to add sriracha and red pepper flakes at home to make it spicy. Finally, my dish was the "traditional ginger" dish - since there was ginger in the name, I expected it to taste like ginger. There were about 2 pieces of ginger and again, I added my own ground ginger from home to even make it have any ginger flavor.
I was really underwhelmed with this place, especially for the price. The local Thai take-out place we used to go to in Michigan had delicious entrees for $8-9 dollars each and were actually spiced appropriately. There has GOT to be better Thai food in Pittsburgh - now we just have to find it.
