| - 3.5 experience. First dinner in Pittsburgh! Also, my first time trying German food!
Party of 4, reservation at 7 pm. TBH, it was pretty empty when we came...but I hear it gets hella packed later at night and on weekends!
Parking: street or parking structure a block away. The area is still under renovation, so please pardon the dust.
Menu: extensive and the font is hard to read (LOL). Separated into:
appetizers, soups, salads, side dishes, burgers & sandwiches, HB specialties, Wurstl, Schnitzel, and Haus favorite.
TLDR;
Service: 4/5- Ladies were super nice and gave us ample time to order. But, they did forget us halfway through the meal...
Ambiance: 4/5- indoor has a country band playing on stage, and a really nice bar with huge beer tanks. Outdoor seating that overlooks the river. They even have games on the bottom floor! The area is a new shopping center, so you should walk around after your meal if it isn't too dark or chilly! There is also a running trail behind the restaurant.
Quality of food: 3/5- maybe this isn't my type of food, but for what it's worth, I would only categorize this as "American traditional".
Pricing: 3.5/5- pretty reasonable for the quantity you get! Alcohol is also decently priced.
We finally ordered:
SOUPS
1. 2 Kartoffelsuppe (creamy potato soup) // YUM! Isn't this just like clam chowder without the clams?
2. 1 gulaschuppe (beef stew with tomato/paprika base) // YUM! Maybe because I was on the plane all day, but this settled my tummy.
SPECIALTIES
1. Scheweinebraten (slow cooked pork roast) // Oh wow, big portion! I actually really like the pork. Kind of reminds me of pork loin though? Potato dumpling was not bad...why are people obsessed with this?
2. Sauerbraten (marinated beef) // Oh boy...too much red wine sauce. The beef was also too dry...but the sides were good!
3. Dunkel bourbon salmon (pan seared Atlantic salmon fillet) // Yum! Fresh. Also came with some steamed vegetables.
WURSTL
1. Wurstplate (bierwurst, bratwurst, frankfurter) // I'm not into sausages...my friend ordered this and finished it clean though!
HAUS FAVORITE
1. Half rack of baby back ribs // YUMMM. I haven't had good ribs in forever!!! I like. Better than other places I've had in CA!
Overall, interesting dining experience. I wouldn't mind coming here for some big portion, comfort food! However, quality does sacrifice. Everything is hella rich in flavor...maybe too much.
