  • So, Left Field was the main objective on my recent foray to the East End (bookended by tasty Indian at Udupi Palace and the ever-lovely Local 1794). I had tasted their beers in bars around the city, and I was universally impressed with the beer. In my mind, they're the best new brewery in Toronto in the last year and a half. I really like the Sunlight Park Saison. The visit to the brewery itself was a little disappointing. First, and this was really strange because I've met the founders out at beer tastings before, we didn't really feel welcomed by the staff. The crowd was mostly locals with cute dogs discussing what they would name their kids and several sets of lesbian couples. The woman tending bar, didn't really say hello, didn't seem happy to see us, and just kind of mumbled at us...not at all the reception I would expect from a newish place hosting beer nerds who'd made a special trip out east just to check the place out. The space itself is nice and simple. It's a beautiful building that looks like it was once an old warehouse. They've outfitted it with simple picnic tables, and you're adjacent to the working equipment. Little loud with the chiller operating. My only other disappointment was that they didn't have any one-off or specialty beers on tap. It was the exact same Maris, Eephus, and Sunlight Park that you can find all over the downtown. I like all these beers, but the point of going to the brewery was to try some of their experimental beers or ones that they haven't distributed as widely. Maybe this will change as they mature. Prices are $5 for 12 ounces...so similar, if not a bit more than what you might pay per ounce elsewhere. No food available, but they don't object to bringing food in. They have a bottle shop with cans (around $3) and swing-top bottles for $7. Unfortunately, there's a $3 deposit on the bottles, which makes it completely impractical for non-locals. Overall, a fun stop to see once, but not worth a return trip.
