| - Planning a funeral is never pleasant, and my family and I had the sad task of planning a service for my grandfather late last month. A daunting task, especially since I am from Southern California area so am not local to Montreal.
My uncle scheduled a couple of appointments with two different funeral homes. The first was very formal and seemed fine. A few hours later we met with Carol-Ann at Kane & Fetterly and - wow - what a difference. Carol-Ann was the perfect mix of professional yet personal, delicately guiding us through a difficult process with grace. Unlike at the other home, there was no upsell pressure as she understood our desire for a simple service and provided us ideas and tips to ensure it went as expected. She was warm and kind, and patient with us as we navigated through the complexities that go with planning a service. We did not feel rushed, nor like we were simply a sale - Carol-Ann was truly "in our corner" and took her time to ensure we understood and were comfortable with everything.
The facility itself was perfect. The other funeral home had seemed a bit commercial and sterile. This facility felt warm and homey. The services are held on the second floor, and the family is provided use of the entire floor which includes a large room for the service, a large adjoining reception room, an entry hall with restrooms, and large and fully equipped kitchen, a separate sitting area, and even a room with a chalkboard and toys for children. Everything is newly renovated and quite nice. My grandmother was very pleased with the look and feel of the entire home.
We quickly decided that this was the home that fit our needs. Imagine our surprise when the estimate was significantly less than the estimate for the other, more sterile, home! We paid our deposit and continued to work with Carol-Ann over the next several days as she gently guided us through the steps of all that needed to be done. I can't imagine that her job is easy, dealing with grieving families, emails and phone calls from multiple people in the family, and trying to ensure everyone is satisfied, but she handled everything with the utmost professionalism. The day of the service, everything was prepared exactly as expected, and she maintained a discreet presence to ensure that all went well during both the service and subsequent reception. The service was broadcast via live webcast to other family members who also commented on how beautiful it was and how smoothly everything went.
Just this week, I emailed Carol-Ann upon my return home with a couple of questions and requests. As always, she responded promptly and kindly, quickly answering my questions and fulfilling my requests. Again an exemplary display of professionalism during a difficult time.
My family and I are grateful to Carol-Ann and Kane & Fetterly for the beautiful service they helped us plan and execute, and for the warmth and professionalism they exhibited during a difficult and emotional time. I highly recommend Kane & Fetterly, and Carol-Ann, for any family in a similar situation.
