  • Ever walked into a bar and walked out with a book? Come to The Lit and you just might. I'm conflicted on how to rate Literary Cafe because it defies rating - it just exists as a comforting corner of the world (well, Tremont). There's no fancy menu with clever drink names, just the traditional selection of liquor and some beers on tap. Whatever pub snack mix at the time (Chex Mix for us) was served with each drink. Now that it's been sold, I hope it'll keep in the original spirit of The Lit! The old owners were laid-back and proud supporters of the arts, hosting a variety of events and showcases for local artists and authors. It was easy to relax into my skin with my friends without yelling over loud music at each other and watch Modern Family on one of the TVs when I zoned out. The Mrs. stepped down from the flat upstairs and told us on our way out that she was getting rid of some of her college books, which had been sitting on a nearby table and of which we were wondering about. She insisted that we take some, and I walked away with a brief summary of world history throughout some of the greatest empires. What a sweet lady, and what a coincidence that she studied history in college and later was co-proprietor of a little piece of Tremont history!
