  • I bring my fiancĂ© to art museums because I like to watch him get angry at modern art. But he's just uncultured. How can he not see that this giant black circle on white canvas totally represents humanity's fall into the abyss? Peasant. Joking aside, modern art is a little silly. Modern art aside, the AGO is quite a nice art museum. There is a good mix of antique and contemporary artwork. Obviously, being in Ontario, there is a heavy lean towards Canadian artists like the Group of Seven. It's nice to see our great white land captured on canvas. AGO also houses some interesting exhibits. When I was there, there was a very impressive model ship exhibit going on in the basement. The museum itself is like a giant piece of art. From the very distinct gigantic wooden staircase to the beautiful narrow corridor made of wood beams and glass, the whole place oozes artistic creativity. Even the restaurant feels cultured and artsy. During the Yayoi Kusama tour, they were serving up a special dinner inspired by her artwork. So yes, I visited AGO for the first time due to the Yayoi Kusama craze. I was one of those people pining for tickets at 10am when the online booking system started. Was it overhyped? A bit. Was it worth it? To me, yes. Art is supposed to make you feel things and I certainly felt things within those Infinity Rooms. Surreal in the pumpkin room, awe in the Souls of Millions of Light Years Away, and a strange sadness in the Aftermath of Obliteration of Infinity. You might've heard by now that you only spend about 30 seconds in each room (after possibly lining up for over an hour). I feel like this isn't enough time to truly appreciate the room but it does make you treasure your time inside (and snap pictures like a madman). I'm not sure if this is the museum's idea of crowd control or if the artist intended it to be this way. I wouldn't be surprised if the reasoning was something like "to juxtapose the concept of infinity by spending as little time as possible within it". Eh. Despite that, I am really glad I got to see Yayoi Kusama's work first hand. Not only was it something special, but it brought me to AGO, which turns out to be quite interesting in its own right. Finally, I am one step closer to being a real Canadian despite living here my whole life. (21/100) - 2018
