STATEMENT OF INTENT
Canadian retailers are committed to accurate scanner pricing. Incorrect prices can result in POOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS (caps added)....
The purpose of the Code is to:
VISIBLY DEMONSTRATE RETAILER COMMITMENT TO SCANNER PRICE ACCURACY (caps added).
1. THE ITEM FREE SCANNER POLICY
Retailers will implement an Item Free Scanner Policy as follows:
1.1 On a claim being presented by the customer, where the scanned price of a product at checkout is higher than the price displayed in the store or than advertised by the store, the lower price will be honoured; and
(a) if the correct price of the product is $10 or less, the retailer will give the product to the customer free of charge; or
(b) if the correct price of the product is higher than $10, the retailer will give the customer a discount of $10 off the corrected price.

MCEWAN does not honour this code, which is a particular insult considering the relatively high prices of the groceries as is.
I used to shop at MCEWAN all the time. Most of the selection is high end and pricey, and many of the other reviewers already covered the variety and quality of items available. I'm here simply to say that even in a place like MCEWAN, you can find the odd bargain if you know where to look as they play a good game of "High-low". About a year ago I found good prices on COUNTRY HARVEST breads and MAPLETON'S ORGANIC yogurt. The last time I shopped there, I simply decided to buy a fat-free Vanilla 750g yogurt for $4.45. The price scanner scanned it as a dollar higher. Usually i get a multitude of items so I might not have noticed this in the past if it occurred but I certainly noticed it for this one sole item. A lineup was forming, but I asked the cashier to please check the price. She called someone who did just that and confirmed that the price was inaccurately labelled. Since this item was less than $10, I informed the cashier that I'm supposed to get it free. She shook her head no. I remained insistent and told her about the code. She directed me to the manager. I tried to be polite, but the manager I was referred to was immediately belligerent. He refused to budge on the issue. He said that I could pay the advertised price.
"Well thank goodness for that" I sarcastically replied, because of course it would be outright fraud if he wouldn't even honour the PROPERLY LABELLED price. He said that this store "couldn't afford" to let this item go for free. He then pre-emptively warned me not to steal the yogurt. I left the yogurt there and vowed never to return. If MCEWAN cannot afford to honour the price scanner's code that shouldn't be my problem.
