| - I've rarely had such a frustrating, disruptive and disappointing flying experience as my trip with AA / US Airways from Flagstaff to Phoenix.
Here are the gory details:
1) I arrive and check-in
2) 15 minutes later, I receive a phone call saying that my flight has been cancelled because the needed plane will not be arriving in Flagstaff. My connections are then compromised.
3) Seeing no one at the desk, I phone reservations. I am rebooked on a flight the following day. I ask about getting my hotel reimbursed and am first told that I can only do that in person. There is no one at the desk. Apparently they return in 3 hours. I explain that I am not going to wait. The phone representative tells me that I am unlikely to get a refund because it was due to the weather. Note: the weather at my location was gorgeous. - The weather at the location of the plane was problematic. This is my first big problem. I understand that the weather at my location cannot be helped but this is a logistical problem. For example, here is how you solve it (without changing the weather): For every (say) 8 flights leaving the South West, you have a standby plane, which you bring into service if a plane cannot get to an airport for a new flight. Yes, this would cost some money (which, judging from their planes, they hates spending), but it would save money on customer representatives constantly busy on the phone, etc. The person on the phone is not convinced by my argument (or at least would not deviate from some text they were reading from). I was informed that I would have to sleep in the airport. If it closes, I was told I would have to sleep on the street. Wonderful.
The next day:
4) I arrive and my flight (and connections) are delayed 3 times due to a maintenance problems with the plane that needs to get to Flagstaff (see point above for how to easily avoid this). Hilariously, the Flagstaff staff don't know about these delays. They only hear after I receive the automated phone call and tell them. They act surprised but grateful as I act as a middleman for the entire morning. I'm glad everyone is so connected at this airline. Perhaps it has something to do with their dated computer system - with every change, it seems like the customer agent has to type a novel.
Oh why go on. You get the picture: Don't do it. Seriously - pay the extra money and go with someone else if you can.
