| - Finally I had occasion to dine at Bill Spoon's Barbeque. I had the $10 lunch special, which is a small BBQ plate with coleslaw, hush puppies, a drink, and one other side; I chose baked beans. The BBQ is chopped pork eastern-NC-style, and it was perfection. The sauce was tangy but did not overwhelm the meat, and the meat was tasty. The baked beans were above average and the hush puppies, well, they may be the best I have ever had. They were fresh, they were sweet, and they had a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that was delightful. The dining room is unaffected; those that know Carolina BBQ joints know exactly what it looks like inside. The food was on my table faster than fast food, and the waitress remained friendly and attentive.
I have enjoyed excellent BBQ at Bridge's in Shelby and at Lexington BBQ, along with many other contenders and pretenders for Carolina BBQ fame, and this, frankly, was the best I have ever had.
