  • EDIT 8/22/2011: I've heard a LOT of reports from friends who say that they've had problems getting hold of the financial aid office, or even trying to get their financial aid to appear on their account. And note that this is a WEEK before classes even starts. I'm keeping my rating of UNLV at 3 stars however, since I usually took classes during summer term and I guess I was just lucky enough to have nicer staff. Just something to keep in mind. Although I never attended the college as an official undergrad student, I did have the chance to visit the campus and take some college classes during the summer. Firstly, UNLV is indeed a commuter campus. That means a majority of the students here pretty much get here, go to class, and scram home. That translates to UNLV not exactly having a strong student life. I remember going to UNLV one afternoon weekday during the school year and was surprised at how almost empty the campus looked! And unless you're parked near the Thomas & Mack or other secluded places, parking will most likely be a pain for you, especially around the afternoon at peak hours. Secondly, UNLV is probably only amazing if you're going there for its Hotel Management program. That makes sense considering it's near all the casinos here. All the other programs seem to be "okay." However, UNLV does have it's merits. I'm lucky enough to have had professors who were willing to help me all the way when I had trouble with my schoolwork, and some of the people around me were nice enough to help when I asked. The staff was also extremely helpful and actually knew what they were doing every time I needed to talk to them about summer term classes. UNLV is also dirt cheap compared to other state universities, but it's up to you to decide whether you think you are getting what you paid for. All in all, UNLV is not a bad school. However, it is not exactly eye-poppingly exceptional either. If you want a school that's a bit more better in NV, head up north to Reno to UNR; academics are better, people are more friendly, and the campus, albeit more older, is absolute gorgeous. If you have the money to attend a better school with more resources like UCLA or USC , by all means do it. But if UNLV is all you can afford, make do with what you can. Just remember that there's a little joke that UNLV actually stands for "U Never Leave Vegas," which, if I look at 97% of my friends who went to UNLV and are still in Vegas 2-5 years since their graduation, seems to be true.
