Asian bakeries always have the sweets that I like. Custard buns, full cakes, green team rolls - everyone has favorites you can't find in a traditional bakery. At very affordable prices, Asahi Bakery is a classic example of a hole-in-the-wall giant. But what really makes Asahi my number 1? The coffee jelly.
We've all had sweet coffee before - Starbuck fraps, Vietnamese iced coffee, tiramisu - but to me this is embodiment of coffee as dessert. In little plastic cups, you spoon into strong coffee flavor with the mild sweetness of jelly. You have the milky sauce on top to blend in the sweetness, light but almost as hard hitting as condensed milk. At barely over a dollar a cup, I haven't had anything as simply good as this.
For that item alone I'll make the drive over and get a box. Every one of my family and friends have loved it. Heck, even a grandmother mistook it as a sauce and somehow elevated her cream puffs! Coffee might not be an obvious choice at Asahi, but it's definitely one of the best.
