Mama Java's was my go-to place when I needed to be totally alone. The Phoenix coffee scene (yes, I actually did just say that) is pretty small so most of the time you end up running into someone no matter where you go in the downtown area. Mama Java's is just far east enough, without leaving Phoenix city limits and venturing off into Scottsdale or Tempe, to get the peace you need. Small, cozy, and friendly. Coffee is good, food is fair, and the service is genuine and welcoming. It's located in an old shopping center that houses an antique store and an old bookstore, too. Lots of parking and free wi-fi. Definitely in my top 10 coffee hangouts in town.
