| - I just got home from staying at Hostel Cat for Saint Patrick's Day weekend. I unfortunately based my expectations for the place on the one and only Yelp review there was at the time and the reviews and write-ups on their website. Later, I found that there are 15 Google Reviews for the place which are much more accurate in my opinion. I am subcategorizing my review into three sections: staff, atmosphere, and activities.
Staff - 2 stars
From the website's skewed (of course) portrayal of the staff, I expected a friendly face to welcome me at the very least. Instead, I got a girl who seemed to hate her job who spoke to me and my friend like we were idiots, read us a friendly, welcoming script in monotone, and didn't even crack a smile when I tried to be funny. She didn't tell us that we would be changing rooms for the second night of our two night stay, nor that we were paying a $20 deposit along with the first night's payment and were expected to come pay for our second night the next day. There were some friendly staff members, but nobody I would consider to be above average.
Atmosphere - 2.5 stars
Definitely a party atmosphere. I expected this. The website uses this as a selling point, and in this area, they deliver. It's a young crowd - lots of young international travelers who want to get drunk and take in the fascinating city of Las Vegas. There was one guy who was very obviously having a really good time on what I would guess to be either speed or some kind of hallucinogen. I'm not too uptight about that kind of thing, but I was glad we weren't sharing a room cause I'm pretty sure he would have robbed me. I spoke to a few girls who were sharing a room with some guys who just busted out some weed and started smoking it in the room which bothered them. So, the party atmosphere was a bit of an adventure. Many of the people staying there were super nice, and I met some really cool people there. The rooms are super basic, but pretty darn clean, and my bed was fairly sleep-able. My friend said her bed the first night was a nightmare, but the next night, when we changed rooms, she took a bottom bunk which she said was much better than the top. The walls of the hostel are decorated with cartoon characters and splattered paint. The place looks pretty good to me.
Activities - 4 stars
This hostel seems to do something fun just about every night. The night of our arrival, a staff member invited us to go with a group of them in the hostel's van and hit the strip. They do something like this several nights a week and the van trips are free. We didn't partake our first night, but the second night, we signed up for their limo tour for $30 ($25 in advance) and went with the group on a limo ride down the strip to the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, then to the club, The Cat House, at the Luxor. This excursion was COOL! The night started at 10 pm with a gathering in the common room with free all-you-can-drink vodka for about an hour until the limo arrived, we had a minute to take pictures with the limo, then we took off down the strip. The music was bumping and everybody was having a great time. The limo was huge and seemed brand new. We got to the club, where we were admitted for free with hardly any wait, and the ladies were given wrist bands for free well vodka drinks. My friend and I skipped out after a while in the club cause we wanted to check out the Strip outdoors on Saint Patrick Day, so we did and took a cab home. They also have tours of the Grand Canyon, which we did not do. Activities, I'd give a 4 out of 5. I could definitely see someone traveling to Vegas solo and having a completely fulfilling social life due to staying at Hostel Cat.
So, to sum it up, I would stay here again. I'll probably stay at a hotel next time I go for the sake of getting more sleep and enjoying a little more comfort. Keep in mind that they have no curfew and it's a party city, so you will often have hostel mates coming into your room and turning the lights on to situate themselves in the early hours of the morning. I guess that's just the way it is in a hostel. I like the excitement of having interesting room mates and nightly activities, so I am definitely planning on staying in a hostel again in the future. In Vegas, I will probably try a different one to see if I can find a more friendly staff, but if I can't find anything better, I'd stay at Hostel Cat again and know that I will have a good time despite the negatives.
