Just moved to Toronto from LA where I'm used to high end salons and service. I called to enquire about the salon and Jason the owner answered and said every stylist is the same when I asked if any of them have any particular specialties. He said he was the most expensive at 70 for a men's cut since he's the owner so I booked with him assuming he must be the best. Got there and was offered a tea and cookie which is a nice touch. I'm used to salons offering any variety of beverage like fruit juices or sparkling water but this place has their signature tea and cookie which is nice but I don't consume either so I passed. Owner Jason seemed nice. A bit of a fake British accent I thought and a palpable ego but that's normal for a salon owner. He's older and had a trainee hold my head while he cut it which was very odd and a first for me and I've been to the best salons in the world. Trainee's usually just assist they don't hold my head but he told him to and I just went along with it. He opens his scissor kit and it's full of old gray hair which is repulsive and I mention it to him asking if Canada doesn't have the same cleanliness salon laws as the US does (you can't have hair on the floor or anywhere / everything has to be cleaned so you don't breed lice in your salon). He said there's nothing wrong with hair and it's not a health issue. I didn't want to piss him off as it was the start of my cut so I didn't press it but right away I knew I wouldn't be back. It's possible his assistant is holding my head because his hands shake. IDK. Next he drops the comb TWICE on the floor and each time picks it up to use on my head again. There's hair from previous cuts on the floor and that's disgusting. I tell him in the US that's illegal and I want to get up and leave and he said it's normal in Canada and that the blue sanitation liquid most barbers sanitize their combs and scissors in doesn't do anything anyway. I realize he's just lying at this point. I then ask where in England he's from since he's effecting a pretty fake accent since I lived in London. He tells me he actually was born there but has lived in Toronto ever since so there's absolutely no reason for him to have any accent at all. He's just effecting an accent to seem cool. Good for him I say and tell him studies have shown that people with British accents do better in business because people associate the accent with Royalty. He then replies that's because everyone from England is Royal. Clearly a guy who has never lived there. Spends a good amount of time on my cut but at the end for some reason does not style it or blow dry it. No product even. Just asks me how I style it and hands me a comb. I comb my hair in place wet to show him and to my surprise he takes off my cape and says it's done. Very strange going to see a stylist and not getting styled. He's supposed to be good at styling. I get home and realize he barely cut my hair at all with all that sniping for an hour and I still had hair hanging in my eyes and would need to find another salon right away to give me a proper cut. The salon seemed decent. The stylists all seemed nice and cheery. It was a dirty with hair on the floor but I didn't inspect anyone else's work station besides Jason's so I have no idea. The wash was standard but without a good scalp or neck massage that is normal with high end salons. When I went to pay, the receptionist explains gratuities must be made in cash because their credit card machine can't process a tip. That's news to me as I also tip on the card in the US but I didn't even ask. I explain I don't have any Canadian cash on me and she said it's fine. Frankly you're not supposed to tip the owner of any establishment anyway if you know tipping protocol and sadly I knew right away when I sat down I wouldn't be returning. Wish I had the guts to just get up the minute I saw his filthy scissors but I really needed a cut and was just too stupid and risked catching lice which I do regret. My bad. Generally when things start bad they don't improve and I should have left before he even started. Good news is so far no lice and I found a really nice high end salon in Yorkville and got my hair cut properly the next week!
