  • Restaurant Week is upon Madison once again. To start the week we decided to try Roast Public House and focus on their Restaurant Week menu. Roast Public House should NOT be your choice for Restaurant Week. It may be a thoroughly enjoyable spot for lunch or dinner but they should abandon what they're "not" (a Restaurant Week restaurant) and focus on what they are (which looks to be an average State Street food and drink spot). The drink menu is ho hum. A mix of decent draft beers and good signature cocktails. After looking at the 5 options for wine I inquired if there was a wine list or other options. I received a "That's it" from our server with a giggle. $8.00 cocktails it would be. Watermelon Mojito (where's the alcohol in this drink???) and the Something Awesome (let's rename this to the Really Sweet Drink With Little To No Alcohol). I kind of felt like we got the virgin styles of these "cocktails". Not good. Let's move on to Restaurant Week!!! I went with the Panzanella Salad, BBQ Ribs and Grapefruit Brûlée. My wife ordered the Pretzel Sticks, Confit Chicken and Chocolate Mousse. I'll stick reviewing my food except for one plate from my wife's selection. My Panzanella Salad was good. This is the only reason for two stars instead of one. Really solid starter plate that duped me into believing the rest of the food would be good. One other note - service has been very good so far. It helps that there were only 4 other tables occupied. My wife ordered the Pretzel Sticks. There were no "sticks". In fact, this was simply a frozen pretzel from Sysco or a Super Pretzel placed on a large white plate. Really??? Main course - BBQ ribs. The vegetables were good. Great mix and nicely roasted. Cornbread was bad. Dry and it pretty much fell apart after picking it up. Let's say that there was no benefit from having the cornbread on the plate. Ribs were very well cooked but there was something "off" with the sauce that I couldn't quite figure out. I wanted BBQ sauce. That's what I ordered. BBQ ribs. The ribs were garnished with scallions and sesame seeds. Are they Asian ribs? BBQ ribs? Asian BBQ ribs? None of the above. They are ribs with an identity crisis. Although they are cooked well and presented well they are not BBQ ribs. Let's give them a new name and describe them differently on the menu. My disappointment has passed "brewing". So we're finishing up the main course. Finishing not finished and here comes dessert. We're not done eating yet but I guess it's dessert time. The server displays the chocolate mousse and asks "who ordered the mousse?" We didn't answer because we're trying to scoop the last of our food in to take on the new plates. So, we're asked in a Mommy Dearest voice (from a college aged server) "WHO ordered the mousse???" We did. Add it to the table I guess... Dessert - Grapefruit Brûlée. I was thinking of the best three words to describe this "dessert" and I came up with them fairly quickly. Yuck, yuck and yuck. This was awfully horrible. It was really, really bad. Pieces of grapefruit (if I'm being too hard I'll say something nice - they were fresh and juicy) covered in sugar that was hit with the torch. There was maple syrup, salt and pink peppercorns. It all came together on a small plate and tasted like something that I never want to put in my mouth again. Ever. As I first said, Roast Public House may be a great State Street restaurant for lunch or dinner. For Restaurant Week, the only good thing about Roast Public House was the fact that we were on State Street and close to the Union for ice cream and maybe a snack... I may give them a try for lunch or dinner sometime in the future but would never consider them again for "something special". UPDATE - The owner of Roast Public House took the time to reach out to me and communicate after my review above. I think it says a lot when a restauranteur does something like this. Kudos for connecting with your customers and taking the time to open a dialogue. That effort exceeded expectations!
