Arrived here at 9 p.m. with a booking.com reservation. When asked by the front desk person for my credit card, I presented my debit card as I always have when paying for rooms (I used it to book the room). He looked contemptuously at the card, and stated that they don't accept them. I pointed out that my paycheck and my Social Security check are directly deposited onto the card. I pay my rent and car payment and everything else from the card. If a hotel wants to ensure that I don't wreck the room or smoke in it, they can always freeze a deposit on the card like some gas stations do. He proceeded to tell me, for no particular reason, that they also don't take SSI direct deposit cards; the implication was that I'm a dumb-ass welfare recipient. I had to school him on the difference between SSI and Social Security, which is an earned benefit. And if I'd blown off the reservation, I'm certain they'd have no hesitation in zapping money from that same debit card! He referred me to a nearby Days Inn, where they happily took my debit card without any attitude. I would never stay in a Country Inn and Suites, based on this experience.
