| - It was the first time my wife and I visited DC Steakhouse and it sure brought back great memories from the past.
The location for this restaurant was previously our favorite hangout for great food and wine years ago when it was 98 South. The location has been through several changes of ownership and concept since 98 South closed and until our visit to DC Steakhouse on 6/19, we never felt the desire to come back.
The decor still exhudes the same vibe as our old haunt and is a comfortable, casual, romantic environment, with background music by some of the greatest singers from an earlier generation... so you can actually enjoy a pleasant conversation without having to yell across the table at each other.
We're not big meat eaters or late diners, and I'm alergic to shrimp, crab & lobster (boo), so we decided to check the place out during happy hour. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Not knowing many of the wines on their list, she was happy go bring a taste of several that we requested. We selected the Hahn Pinot Noir, which provided a pleasant pairing with our menu choices.
The HH offerings seamed to be an excellent value, so for our "appetizer" we ordered the Open-Faced Tenderloin Steak Sandwich ($7) which came with sweet potato fries. We ordered it Medium and it came Medium Well, but we were still pleasantly surprised flavor wise. It's an excellent value and we'll definitely be back to try some of the other HH selections whenever we feel like dining early. Hopefully the next time, the steak will come served as ordered, as one would expect from a place with "Steakhouse" in their name.
For the entré, I ordered the pan fried Walleye pike ($21) with mixed green salad and wth baked potato, which we shared. You don't find Walleye often in Arizona restaurants and since we both grew up in the Midwest it's a must try. The fish was fresh, flavorful and highly satisfying. We'll definitely order it again, perhaps the broiled version... although the Cajun Salmon did catch our eye. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
TIP, there is a "shared plate" charge of $10, but their Happy Hour sandwiches count as an entré, so if you're like us and usually share an appetizer and entré, go during HH to avoid the shared plate fee.
While we still miss the original 98 South and the eclectic menu from PT Barnum, DC Steakhouse has been added to the "take our friends" list of go to places whenever we venture outside Gilbert. It's definitely a reason for a drive to old town Chandler.
