| - We stayed downtown for the first two nights of our trip and only for 1 reason: CES. I got a great deal on airfare but realized right away that there was something jacking the hotel price up and found out that the blasted consumer conference was going to jeopardize all of the money I just saved. I found that the downtown prices were still cheap and had never made it downtown in previous trips, so decided why the hell not? I was able to get our room rate for $39 per night which is fabulous.
The hotel itself was a'ight. The staff were all really nice, albeit a little slow. When we got in, only two people were working the check in desk and one guy checking in was being a complete ass. I almost went off on him because there is absolutely no excuse to act like a baffoon like that and treat another human being with such little respect.
The good:
-Hash House a Go Go was AWESOME breakfast food. Huge portions so the prices may seem a little steep, but split with someone and it's only $12-15 for the two of you.
-McDonalds and Subway in the hotel help keep the dining prices low.
-Fremont Street Experience was fun for a few hours
-The rooms are newly remodeled and really nice for the price. (Don't expect anything luxury but it doesn't feel like you're staying in a $30 a night hotel.)
-Couldn't hear the sounds of Fremont, at least in our room, so it was good for the first night when we just wanted to pass out.
-Easy to get to from the airport -- take the WAX bus and walk a few blocks.
The meh:
-The restaurants all close super early during the week. For us party animals who like to soke up the liquor before bed, you're screwed.
-The pillows and bed were okay. I sleep with about 5 pillows at home and have them arranged very precisely. If I came back, I'd bring some pillows with me. They only provided two flimsy down pillows. I couldn't get comfortable after 2 nights of sleep.
The bad:
-Reeeked of smoke -- guess I've been spoiled by the Strip hotels because you can never smell smoke there. Warning: EVERY hotel downtown smells of smoke, some less than others but if you're a non-smoker, you will feel like you're going to choke/die.
-This isn't the Plaza's fault but downtown isn't the most hopping place unless you're a hardcore gambler. Even with the cheap food and drinks, we got bored after a day and a half there. If you're really into gambling, play downtown. The slots are looser and the table minimums are usually lower.
All in all, I don't think that we'd stay downtown again unless we were in similar circumstances. I was glad we DID get to see it and if we came back, we'd probably stay at the Plaza but that's a big IF.
